We are so eggcited about Easter
Children’s Charity Easter Egg Donation
There is a children’s charity in Portsmouth called Second Chance who work with children who may have been abused, sexually, physically or mentally. Second Chance was founded in 1984 and grew from the work of the founder and Chief Executive, Doug Hulme, in special schools. Uniquely, it takes the youngsters fishing and uses the medium of this popular leisure time activity to establish links and lines of communication between the youngsters and the volunteer adults, and to give children a sense of achievement, confidence and a social understanding. Inside their main building on Somers Road, Portsmouth, there is a classroom suite for use after school as a drop in centre for homework clubs and other support. It is also used during the day as a temporary alternative to school, for those excluded or unable to attend school as part of their ‘Back to School’ scheme, most notably supported by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. There is a drop in Play Scheme for parent and toddlers and they have some of the best facilities in Portsmouth for this.
Second Chance have had Easter Egg donations in the past but no one had come forward this year to offer when we contacted them. They were therefore delighted with our offer to donate Easter Eggs.
Christie Intruder Alarms Ltd and Southern Monitoring Services began collecting Easter Eggs on Tuesday 28th March and the overall response over a 2 week period was amazing! Part way through the collection period, we contacted Doug Hulme to ask how many children the agency work with, and were surprised to learn it is in the region of 500! Doug said they were incredibly grateful for the 35 eggs we had collected so far, and most families would have at least one, and a lot of the 500 were in fact young adults, some in their 20’s. However, CIA and SMS saw this as a challenge. Then much to our surprise a mystery donation of 99 eggs was made anonymously and out of the blue, bringing the total collected by the deadline of midday on Wednesday 12th April, to a whopping total of 214 Easter Eggs!
We at CIA and SMS are all delighted and proud to have participated in collecting the eggs for such a worthy cause, naturally all charities are worthy, but Second Chance are a fairly small charity and rely on local companies and individuals to help with fundraising.
We took the eggs to Second Chance on Wednesday 12th April and met with one of the volunteers there, Tim. Tim extended their gratitude and reiterated donations of any kind are so welcome and appreciated.
