You may have noticed stories in the media recently about smoke detectors failing to detect a fire or, in one case, actually causing a fire and wondering why this has happened – after all, a smoke detector is a smoke detector – right? Well actually, wrong!
In the first place, there are heat detectors and smoke detectors; they serve different purposes and should not be confused. A heat detector only detects heat (fire) so will not respond to smoke, whereas a smoke detector, as its name suggests, will react to smoke alone.
There are also different types of smoke detectors for different specific applications. Some detectors are slow to react to certain types of fire or will not work at all, while others will false alarm from practices that are commonly carried out in the course of every-day business.
Many fire alarm installation companies are not aware of the different types of smoke detector, or do not have the expertise to know where a particular detector should be used. They opt for a one-detector-type-fits-all approach and if it persistently false alarms, they may try adjusting the detector’s sensitivity or replace it with a heat detector.
And what happens then, if there is a fire?
Nothing. Except your building burns or, worse still, someone gets hurt. And the only way you’d find they got it wrong is when it’s too late.
