Fire and security safes frequently asked questions (FAQ)

We’re often asked the same or similar questions about cash/valuables safes or fire protection safes/cabinets, so we’ve put together the following FAQ. Have a question not answered here? Ask it in the comments section below and we’ll endeavour to add it to the FAQ as quickly as possible.

Where should I install the safe?

As safes are not the most aesthetically pleasing items, they are generally hidden away and installed in built-in wardrobes or placed in cupboards. As safes can be extremely heavy, it’s advisable to install safes on a ground floor usually in a well-hidden cupboard, located under the stairs if possible.

Should I choose a key, digital or dial combination?

In both commercial and private domestic environments, a digital lock is the most convenient locking method to use.  Some Eurograde Rated safes have very large keys, which when not in use, have to be hidden away. A digital or dial combination is in your head, so reduces an opportunist burglar’s chance of entry.

Can I set a time delay?

Safes have a lock that can be set to delay unlocking the safe. This can be delayed for a specific period of time between 1 to 99 minutes – typically between 1 – 33 minutes. The safe will only be opened once the correct access code has been entered.

What is the opening period?

This is the time window that the user has to enter the correct code and open the safe after the time delay has expired.

How do I protect against fires?

You can also purchase safes that come with either no protection from fire or fire protection for those businesses at risk. These safes are graded by the number of minutes that these paper documents can withstand a fire for without being destroyed. Insurance protection is offered for 20, 30, 60 or 120 minutes for paper documents.
Tip: If you would like to protect other items such as hardware or media equipment against the risk of fire, then you will need to purchase a specific data safe.

Can we receive an audit?

In a commercial setting, a digital lock offers more benefits as it can provide an audit trail. This trail captures a predetermined amount of user operations/events given both the time and date the safe was operated. A digital lock also offers a number of additional features to enhance security.
