Chris’ Great South Run (For James)
On April the 1st (more fool me!) I was sitting on the couch late at night – kids settled, wife reasonably happy watching the normal TV – and I thought to myself, “I need a challenge”, especially as my Wii kept reminding me that my ‘Wii fit age’ is 60!
After browsing the web, I landed on the BUPA Great South Run page, and thought to myself “A 10 mile run? How hard can that be?” and promptly registered.
However, after a five minute test run later that week, I was crawling on the floor! At the time, I thought, “Best not to run for charity”; just in case I didn’t make it around the course.
All that changed, though, when a friend of ours called to tell us her son James (aged just three) had been diagnosed with leukaemia – cancer of the blood. Devastating news for any parent.
I wanted to help so when I found out about the great work done by the Children with Leukaemia charity, I decided to up my game, dedicate my run to James and raise as much as I can.
James has acute lymphoblastic leukaemia which is the most common but least scary type of leukaemia. There is an 80% chance that he will be cured as they can now control and eventually eliminate many of the leukemic cells in the bone marrow.
But if recovery is ever to be 100% for this and other cancers, so much more research is needed, and research of course needs funding. Which is where you come in!
I understand that giving to charity is a personal thing and many people already give to a range of wonderful charities. But even so, I hope you will feel able to support me by donating to Children with Leukaemia – in the words of the Tesco slogan “every little helps”. You can pay online by following this link to the fund raising page I’ve set up on the “b my charity” website or, if you’d rather, you can give direct to me.
By the way, the training’s going well, even clocked up 200 miles now so I’m reasonably confident that I will make it to the finishing line! And it would be very encouraging if you came along to Southsea Common the 25th October and join all the other supporters!
